WHANGARATA.
On Friday lift t*e first euchre and dance social of the season was held in the schoolroom. There was quite a large attendance, many coming from a di6tanc?. Seldom has there been such a charmingly pleasant sense c£ sociability as existed throughout the evening. The National Anthem having been sung, the chairman, Mr Ewitg, opened the proceedings with a short address, which was followed by the performance of the sword dance by little Mish Watt 9, attired in Highland costume. The display of tha young perfomier which was watched by a delighted audience, and prolonged applause greeted her on its conclusion. Later on she gave the Highland Fling and Irish Jig in typical dress. Mr Whiteside played the accompaniments for her, he being also attired in Hignland dress. Eucbre was played with keen interest for over an hour by 36 players, after which supper was passed round. The distribution of prizes followed. Miss Tuohy secured first for ladies, a Bilver jewel boz, presented by Mr Parker of Mercer; Mr F. Dromgool won first for men, a silver ash tray presented by Mis 3 Beamish; the booby prizes fell to the lot of—but, hush! don't mentbn it! Dancing in the other mom was then commenced, and was kept up till 3 a.m., Mr H. Laurence being M.C. and Messrs Whiteside, Glen Reston and G. Kerrigan providing the dance music. So passed one of the most pleasant nights spent in Whangarata. The Ladies' Patriotic Working Club benefited to the extent of £3 from the proceeds of the evening. Mr Kcst'Jti has juet sold bib farm at the nice price of £4O pur acre.
