A County Road (?)
I TO THE EDITOR.!
Sir,—-A few clays ago 1 had occasion to journey from i'okeno vis Tuakau to Pukekohr. I have nevtr seen the roads in eucli a drcrdful state as ihey are at present. They are worse now than tfcey havj b.en for many ycais, anJ seem to he going back in the matter of maintenance. Nowhere could I a.c evidence of any portion tf the £8001) debt in the ahape of cverdraft that the County Council has incurred duri'g the last twelve mni.ths having been expended. "Drury Fiopathe," did \ou say! When i got to my destine tiun 1 could /nt refrain from quuti g the following lineß from Burns:— I'm now anived —tbaiks to the godsThru' pathways rough ard muddy. A certain sign that mukin' roads Is no' this people's study. Altho' I'm not wi' Scripture cram' 4, I'm sure the Bible says That heedless sinners shall be damn'd Unless they mend their ways. The first part of this quotation applies admirably to the state of affairs on most of the Franklin County roads, and I would like to warn the-local body responsible that delays are dangerous, and as having heard the remarks made by some of those who have to use the roads, I would earnestly appeal to them to take sp-cial heed to the last two lines of tne loregoirg quotation.—l am, etc., BALLOCHMYLE.
