WHANGARATA.

On Saturday last a patriotic meeting of ladies was held in the schoolroom to discuss ways and means for assisting to provide comforts for the soldiers at the front or about to go, also for the wourded. The attendance numbered in the teens, several others sending word that they would willingly assist in any way they found possible. Mrs Coulter, the organiser, was unanimously elected chairwoman and Miss Beamish secretary. It was decided to get all necessary information as regards articles required, and the most suitable material used for the same, and to meet weekly. The young people of the district have instituted a euchre and dance social to be held fortnightly, on Friday nightp, the proceeds going to assist in procuri.iic materials for the Ladies Patriotic Working Club.

The weather has taken a decided change for the batter for a week past, eo that the farmers are getting quite a bustle on witb ploughing, discing, top-dressing, etc. Ihe milking season commenced early this year. A few of the dairy farmers have quite a number of cows already milking, but teed is rather scarce, with one or two excepti us. Anxiety lest the district should lose its assistant teacher through tin small attendance of schoul children has been remedied by the arrival in the district if several new families with children of school age, namely, Mr Hayward, the purchaser of Captain Potter's farm, Mr P. Cooney, who has returned to the borne farm, and Mr Marx, a new arrival from the Old Country, who is at present leasing Mrs Cooke's farm.
