PUKEKOHE'S NEW RATE.
Increase Foreshadowed.
At the mreting of the Pukekohe Borough Council on Wednesday last the Finance Committee submitted an estimate of receipts and expenditure tot the current year, and recommended that a General Rate of ljd in the £ should be levied with some slight reductions in the special rates. Ihe Mayor explained that although it was proposed to increase the General Rate from last year's figure of Id to ljd the actual increase would only be oneeighth of a penny owing to reductions it was proposed to make in the special rates. The Mayor went on to state that the increase was brought about by a sum of £2438 having been allocated for urgent works on roads, the Council's rdta being to do such work out of the General Rate, and to a9k the sanction of the ratepayers for a loan of £33b5 for additional road works. A lid rate would produce £2517 on the capital value of £402,505, the balance brought forward on April Ist was £1062, and other estimated receipts were £504, giving a total of £4083, the estimated expenditure being £4085.
Formal notice or' motion was given by the Mayor that at a special meeting to be held on August 11th he would move that rates should be struck in accordance with the Finance Committee's recommendations.
