HOCKEY.
(By "Bully-Off.)"
On Saturday, July 17th, the Franklin Hockey Association held a | bockey tournament at Pukekohe in aid ct the Hospital Ship, and were successful in havng a very satisfactory return, thanks to the good management of the Association's President, Mr Woollett. The Areta Hockey Club sent a team from Auckland to meet a combined Pukekohe and Puni representative team. The game was played under favourable weather conditions and the spectators were able to witness a good clean game of hockey. That the selectors had shown great tact in their choica of a team wss proved by the result of the game, viz.: Areta 1, Pukekohe ml. The home team played a good defennva game, and considering previous play there was a marked improvement, although there are one or two of our reps who will have to improve s'.ill more to justify their place in the team. The Pukekohe and Puni combined aide were as follows:—l'ennyl Moftitt, Urace, McDonald and Wipgins, forwards; Robert', K. Adam-, and Bro*n, half-backs; B. Reynolds and A. Landon, backs; H. Reynolds, goal.
Wiggins, as right wing, played the game of the day, being good on the attack, always in his place and handling his stick very' tricky ij. Moiiitt was smart on the attack, but was not quite up to his usual form. Grace proved a very satisfactory bully. KcDonald played a good, dashing game, being to the fore on the attack, but was inclined to waGder out of his place. Penny, on the left wing, played fairly well, but failed to mark his man and was inclined to over run the ball, atlliough he has the makings of a good player. Roberts, as captain, displayed his usual dashing form, and had a very dangerous opponent tj mark in the first half. He was more at eass tran in past matches, not having to check his men so often as treviously. E. Adams, as centre half, was smart in stopping the ball with his pads, but was inclined to be rather nervous. J. Brown proved a more than useful right half. B. Reynolds, as left full-back, played an exceptionally good game, and was very sure with the ball, but his scoop stroke was not so co> spicuous. At no time of the game was he bustled, his play being very careful. A. Landon quite earned his place in the team, and was very sure at stoppirg the ball. M. Reynolds wa9 in his place as goal-keeper, being a very sura man for the poistion in the team. He came to light whenever wanted and mada several good saves by finding the line. In the second spell Roberts was goal keeper and H. Reynolds played left half, but the change was not justified. Wiggins was also changed, he being put on the lett wing, where his play was even better than in th? first spell. The play of the full backs proved that they had been well coached as they were very sure at stopping the ball.
Mr Robinson, uf Aucklaud, acted as referee. At the conclusion of the matcbjthe players were entertained at the Pukekohe Hotel, but owing to the visiting players having to catch the 6.7 p.m. train back to Auckland, th 3 spcechmakng was brief. The Areta captain thanked the I'ukekohe players for the enjoyabh day's oulrg, and Mr Roberts suitably responded. l'he members of the Puui Hockey Club held a meeting at Mr J. Landon'B on ThuraSay last, and at the conclusion of the meeting an impromptu smoke concert was held. Two trophies have been presented to the funi club by Mr J. Landon and Mr W. Jone*. and will be allotted by baJlut I) the players showing most improvement.
