ARBOR DAY AT PUKEKOHE.
A ceremony in connection with the celebr&tioj of Arbor Day was carried out at the Pukekohe District High Rchoul on Wedresday last. The children assembled as usual in the afternoon, and short addresses were given by the Kev. F. B. Dobson and Mr F. Ferkitip, members of the School Committee, who pointed out the evils of deforestation and the asthetic and commercial value of tree-planting. Mr Dobson also described how in the early days New Zealand was visited by whalers and others for the purpose of obtaining kauri spars. The pupils were then marched down to the loner school ground and lined along Harris street, where the tree planting was dure. Under the supervision of th 9 teachers and of the Kev. F. B. Dobson and Messrs Perkins and Patterson about 150 Lawso iana trees were' planted, which when they grow up will form an ornamental hedge. The actual planting was done by the pupils, who contributed 4d each towards the cost of the trees, the contributions having been previously invited by the committee. By this means about 33s was raised by t v .e pupil?.
Thj work of planting having been accomplished, the pupils were marched into school and dismissed, ' the remainder of tbe school day (about an bour) being granted as a holiday.
