MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.

A meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society wbs held on Tuesday evening latt, a very enjoyable time being spent, although there was not the u.ual cumber present. The subject for the evening was Heading Competitions. A little difference of cpinion seemsd to exist as to the manner in which readiog competitions should be conducted, and a good deal ol time was taken up in discussing this. Finally five of the members gave prepared readings. The judges appointed were Miss Sanderson, Miss Lakeman and Mr W L. West, and they decided that Mrs McConnell's was the best reading, Miss U. Kossiter being placed second. Mr W. L. West passed Bome rather humorous remarks on people who wet their fingers to turn over pages. Miss Sanderson and Miss Lakeman also criticised, and replies were given by the competitors and the chairman. It was suggested that the judges should read and give other members a chance to criticise them, and this was acted on. The subjict for the next mseting is Impromptu Speeches.
