PATUMAHOE.

MILITAKY BALL. The cadets of Mauku and Patumahoe district held their annual military ball in the local hall on Friday evening, June 25th, in aid of the Hospital Ship Fund, the handsome sum of £lO being raised. The secretary, Mr Horace Hay, and the committee are deserving of great praise for the way they worked together to make the gathering a success. The ball was opened with the Einging of the National Anthem, and the Grand March followed. Ihe buibVig was gaily decorated with national flags, evergreens, rifles and swords, and presented quite a military appearance. The following boys undertook tbe wurk of decorating, viz.: Horace Hay, George and Stanley Arvidson, George Michell, Tom Wright, George McAlpine, a.id Gordon Howe. Mr H. Odium kindly lent lis collection cf ffags and assisted tbe boys with the work. First-class music was supplied by Mr Reid, assisted by the Misses V, and F. Bailey, and Messrs W. Pbillipps ar.d J. Cain. Messrs G. Howard, H. Hay and M. Irwin carried out their duties of M.C.'s io a manner that left nothing to ba deeired. A dainty supper was handed round by the lomrmttce, who wish to thank Mrs N. Cotter and Mis 3 Knight for kindly assisting in preparing the same beforehand A pleasant interlude in the proceedings was the rerdering of a eong by Mr A. Butler, with Miss V. Bailey as accompanist.

A football match of great interest was played before a large crowd ot onlookers on Saturday, at Patumaboe, between the Pukekohe and Mauku senior teams. The spectators became very excited towards the finish in the hope that there was going to bs a win lor Mauku, but the visitors won by 6 to 3. Mr D. Fulton, of Tuakau, was tha referee. The Mauku team have improved wonderfully in their play tince the beginning of the season. Mr J. Forbes, the new captain, is a very keen player, and is deserving of great credit tot his able selection and coaching <)f liia team.
