THE WAIUKU RAILWAY.

Ths decision of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce, aa reported in our last issue, not to pursue further action in regard to Pukekohe being the dt pot or making-up place for ihe trains to run on tbs new Waiuku line is tLe commonsense outcjme cf the construction cf the railway as planned and carried int) effect. If the route selected for the line had been to branch oil" from Pukeknhe the people of Waiuku would probably have been quite cjDtent to acquiesce in the arrangement, but seeing that the route lies further north and Paerata is to bs ths connecting lick with the main line, it is obviously unreasonabh to expect the Kailwuy Depar ment to reverse the engine and to lun the train arriving ?t Paerata from Waiuku south to Pukekohr, or to think that the future users of the line, the hrge majority of whom wiil naturally have Auckland as their objective, would countenance an unnecessary extra jou r ney entailing needless loss of time. Jn the same way it would be reasorabh tJ assume that the Kailway Department would, as far as goods are c charge freightage according to tre actual number of miles covered. It is perhaps unfortunate for Pukekohu that the Waiuku railway, when running, will deprive the town of the through traffic that now comes from along the route of the Waiuku line, but this is only the logical outcome cf progress and advancement of a d strict warranting the construction of a new railway. The interests of Pukekohe and Waiuku are to a very great extent bound up in one another, and now that things as regards railway matters are sell led the spirit of keen and even bitter livalry that has unfortunately been engendered, and in which the residents at either end have Bhared, should entirely disappear.
