S ir ,—A letter appeared in your columns some montos ago under the above heading, the theme tf which was improvements to the roads, etc. That letter had its effect, more or less, a keener interest and spirit being taken in local matter?. Would that Fapakura would "Wake up" in a matter that is obviously at present of supreme importance, nut orly n itself but to t;.e Empire. There are within a few miles of Papakura thr.e scure and a-half of sintle, cliigbh men who shoull be serving, cr preparing to serve, their King and Country. Kitchener called them and told them that their King and Country and their trenchers wanted thc-m; must have them. He did not say : ' 'lf you have Insure and feel inclined to come we will be glad to see you and have you.'' No, he said: "Your Kirg and Country r.eed 4 "yoi'." There are in ibis ci-trict farms carrying six adrtt workers; farms that are all under cultitation, end the owners of which say individualiy that they have a hard struggle to make a living. From these farms two or three could be drafted and spared for (he front. Shades of departed pioneers, the spirit, the pluck, the grit is goce! At a recent meeting of the committee of the National Reserve, when names were submitted for enrolment, one loyalist objected (o two single, strorg, young men burg enrolled, and was promptly "sat or.' - Yet the two were employed by a firm wLich has four eligibles in its list. There may be a reasonable cause for some to be here, but those who have tot such cause should be figuratively kicked out of the district to do as Kipling said: "Fight and be dam'd.
