MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.

toadies' Evening.

Judging by the very large audience which partically tilled the Parish Hall on Tuesday night last, people expected somethiog good fot the Ladies' Evening, and in this they were not by any means disappointed, for a bright, crisp, entertaining programme was provided, and highly appreciated by all present.

Prior to the commencement of the programme, the secretary, Miss Sanderson, spoke feelingly on the loss the Society bad sustained bv the death ot one of their finest members, the late Mr H. E. Vincent, and expressed sympathy with bis surviving relatives in their great bereavement.

Ihe stage was pleasingly decorated with flowers and greenery, and draped with flags. Mrj W. L. West presided. The following programme was submitted:— A series of amusing competitions; pianoforta duet, "Grand March" (Sullivan), Misses H. Kossiter and M. P. Williams; recitation, "The Well of St. Keen," Miss Barr; violin solo, "The Rosary," Miss M. Williams; reading, "The Ballad of Splendid Silence," Mrs McConnell; song, "King's Owe," Miss Harris; recitation, "The Inventor's Wife," and encore number "Women of Mumble's Head," Miss Clover; song, "The Link Divine," Miss Eva Barriball; humorous reading, Mrs W. L. West; song, "My First Love," Miss E. Rosstier. Three very amusing charades were given; also a laughable mock Town Board meeting, in which skits were made on the various members of the Town Board, the subject matter being certtin inequalities in the road near the iown Hall, and a lamp that according to the satirists did not dispel the gloom thereabouts. Miss A. Woodward read a striking reply to Mr Gomez's lecture at tbe previous meeting, and the same will be published in our next i-sue. Supper was provided by the ladies, in their usual liberal stjle. A vote of thanks to the ladies for the fine evening they had given was moved by Mr H. 0. Mellsop and heartily carried. The singing of the National Anthem con:luded an excellent evening.
