SOME CONTRASTS.
Germany is a land of authority; EngInnd is a" land of public opinion plus habit: America is a land of liberty plus Ivnch law.
In Germany the strong boss the weak: in America the weak boss the strong; in England the weak and the strong muddle along together. In Germany the woman walks behind; in America the woman walks in front: in England the woman walks alongside, and every now and then bangs the man on the head. Germans never decide, they wait for orders; the English seldom decide, localise whenever they do they feel themselves hound to act. Americans alwiys decide, as a matter ol recreation, but usually forget the next day what it w.'i.i about!
In Germany life an i ternal drill: in England life is an obstacle ra ■■; .n America life is a swift dr./y slide to ih" S nate or the jail. In Kngland a successful mill is knighted; in America he is indited.
(Jermany's drawback is a heavy-wit-ted peasantry: Britain's drawback is n heavv-ivitted aristocracy ; America's drawback is that it lias neither peasantry nor aristocracy, nothing but a general ininblc id' all sorts.
