CRIMEAN VETERAN'S DEATH.
Another of the few remaining links with the Crimean War, 185455, was snapped on Saturday last in the death of Mr John Griffin, at the residence of his son, at Onewhero. The deceased, who was 81 years of age, was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland. As a young man he enlisted in the 85th Light Infantry Regiment, afterwards being transferred to the 19th Foot. He was wounded whilst taking part in the Crimean War and received the Crimean War medal with three clasps, together with medals for the battle or Alma, Inkerman, and Sebastopol. He was also awarded the Turkish medal and further wore the Veteran's medal. The late Mr Griffin arrived in New Zealand by the sailing ship Ganges 60 years ago last February. He first settled at Papakura and subsequently at Pokeno. For the last 49 years he lived at Tuakau, where he followed up farming pursuits. He leaves & family of three sons and five daughters. The funeral took place in the Roman Catholic Cemetery at Tuakau on Tuesday last.
