LOCAL AND GENERAL.

' Th 3 installation of the Mayor of Pukekohe, to be followed by the first meeting of tbe new Council, will take place on Wednesday evening next. The next ordinary monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council will be held on Thursday, May 13tb, instead of as usual on the first Thursday in the month. In the final tie of the Handicap Pairs Competiton, played recently on the Pukekohe Bowling Club's ureen, Dr Wake and Mr F. Perkins defeated Messrs D. Roulston and J, Adams.

Messrs Edmund Mahony and] Son, solicitors, give notice in an advt, in this issue that debtors and cieditors in the estate of L>. Dalton deceased, should communicata with them without delay. The Rev. U. Froßt was operated on for appendicitis yesterday (Thursday) in a private hospital in Auckland, and we are glad to hear by advices this morning that the operation was successful and that the rev. gentleman ia progressing satisfactorily. Owing to interference by members of the public with the work of the Fire Brigade at the recent fire a notice appears in our advertising columns that the Borough Council will under regulations in future take proceedings against offenders. The Pukekohe Parliamentary Uniun is to resume s tting on Thursday evening next, when the subject of debate at the Oddfellows' Hall will be the Governor's Speech and Address-in-reply. Intending new members are requested to communicate with either Mr W. H D. Wily or Mr E. Allan.

In view of the probability that the petition for an additional constable to be stationed in Pukekohe will not be acceded to by the t'olice Department, it has been decided to proceed with the appointment of a night-watchman. A selection has been made and the new official will commence duty as from Monday next.

Messrs W. P. Williams (AssistantDistrict Traffic Manager, Weilllngton), A. W. Morgan (AssistantDistrict Manager, Christchurch) and Mr Hutchings (Assistant-Station-master, Wellington), who were .appointed by the Minister of Railways to regrade all officered stations in the Dominion, visited "Pukekuhe, Papakura and Druty on Wedhestfay last or the purpose indicated.

The Rev. T. G. Brooke, Home Missionary Secretary of the Methodist Church, is supplying the Rev. G. Frost's work on Sunday and will preach at Pukekohe in the morning, in and the evening he will conduct an "In Memoriam " service in the Tuakau Church. The Rev. A. M. Costain, the newlyappointed assistant minister, will conduct the morning service at Tuakau, and the evening service at Pukekohe.

That advertising in the " Pukekohe Times " pays is testified to by Mr W. H. C. Glasson, of Drury. Mr Glasson advertised a farm property at Runciman for sale and he writes that as the direct result of the advt in the " Times " a sale was effected within a week- of the insertion of the advt. A local trader also reports the receipt of a substantial order for certain goods from a settler of some 40 miles distant, who in a covering letter stated that he had seen the goods concerned advertised in the " Pukekohe Times." The usual crop of disappointid would-be voteis were in evidence at the election on Wednesday and in two instances individuals came from Auckland only to find they were ineligible to vote by reason uf their -names not appearing on the electoral roll, although they 6till possessed qualifications. Several complaints were forthcoming that although votes had been cast last election names had since been removed from the roll. The disappointed ones, however, have only themselves to blame, as it is their duty to send in claims for inclusion on the supplementary roll, if by any chance their names do not appear un the main roll. At the householders' meeting held at Pukekohe on Wednesday a discussion ensued as to the advisability of carrying on the compulsory continuation classes, the suggestion being that as most of the scholars were girls it waa unwise that they should be out at night, the time of lads was already partially occupied with drilling duties. On the other hand it was urged that extended educational facilities were tor the public good, and that scholars desiring to take advantage of them should not be deprived of the classes. On a vote it was decided that the classes ehould be continued.

The New Zealand Dairy Association have advised their suppliers as follows: "Ab there has been a further advance of the butter market, we have found it posdibie to make another increase of one pennv per pound upon the montnly advance against butter-fat which will take effect as from the Ist May. This is in addition to the increase which was notified in our circular of the 21st inst., and brings the advance to threepence per pound more thau was advanced against supply during the same period last seasoD. The amount ot profits available for distribution will ulsj be greater this season. It will be sumething towards minimising losses sustained by suppliers as the result of the recent druught, and the higher rate of payment should encourage suppliers to maintain their deliveries as long as possible."

The work of counting the votes recorded at the Council electiou on Wednesday was necessarily of a protracted character by reason of toe lengthy list of candidates, 17 in number. Mr J. f l . Deane, lnwn Clerk and Returning officer, in conjunction with his staff of officials, however, got through the counting as expeditiously as possible The figures for th« mayoral election were announced about 7.45 p.m., but the Council returns were l.ot forthcoming until cl"Be on 10.30 pm. A large crowd had then assembled and loud cheering greeted the reading of the list of successful candidates, the name of Mr Ivan Motion, who figured at the top of the poll, being given a particularly hearty reception. Amid much enthusia?m the new Mayor (Mr Masjn), Councillors Motion, Barter, Beatty, Patterson, and Uilkcy briefly returned thanks for their election.

At th 3 P.S.ft. meeting on Sunday next in the Oddfellows' Hall Mr F. Souater will he the speaker, his subject being "The City Beautiful." The Mayor-el set. Mr Mason, will preside. In connection vvith Wednesday's Council election, Messrs Bart u r, Clarke, Motion, Bilkey, Mason, Morntjoy, Beatty and Hubbard convey per the iredium of our advertising columns thanks to the electors for the votes recorded in their favour. The fund recently opened in Pukekohe in connection with the purchase of the Lindauer collection of pictures in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund is as follows Pukekohe Borough Council, £25 ; C. Shipheri, £lO ; D- R. Hami'ton, £1 ; total, £36. At a genernl meeting of members of the Franklin A. and F. Society, held in Pukekohe on Tuesday last, the re.:essary resolution was passed authorising the executive to make financial arrangements for the rosding of the old showground sections a.id the deevloj.ment of the new ground.

A full attendance of members of the general committee of the Pukekohe Presbyterian Charge is requested at a Rathering to be held on TnurstJay evening next for the purpose of meeting a commission from the Home Mission Committee of the Auckland Presbytery. Particulars will be found in an advt. in this issue.

It is rumourei that a petition is likely to be presented in connaction with tna Borough Council election on Wednesday. The allegation is that there was interference with voters and that in one or two cases information was euppliel to certain persons that they were ineligible to vote with the result that they did cot enter the polling-station.
