GLENBROOK.
[From Our Own Correspondent. ] A social evening was given by Mr and Mrs Creighton to say farewell to their youngest son, who was home for a few days from Trentham, on Tuesday, April 20th. A very enjojable evening was spent, and the sincere wish was expressed by all that Trooper James Creighton will return safe and sound after having done his duty to the Empire. We are all pleated to sea Mr and Mrs T D. Reid home again after their trip to the Old Land; they both look well ard no doubt will continuj to feel the berelit of their trip. The land all round is looking nice and green again after the severe drought, but the feed is still very short. The high price of seed has not stopped the laying down of new pasture) and aulumn oats, but fresh paddocks are to be seen doing well all round. Tha district continues to go a&fad in spits of adverse circumstances, new land being broken up and fenced. Sheds and formation work ruund the Glenbrook railway station; and a nice new residence has been built by Mr P. Dromgool, builder, on Mr Smeeton's farm. A plain and fancy dress ball was held in the hall on Thursday evening, April 22nd, and was very successful, in spite ct Waiuku having one on the sams evening, which showed bad taste after Glenbrook postponing their function to suit Waiuku. The hall was nicely decorated with greenery and flowers. The committee worked hard, and deserve credit for a pleasant evening. Mr J. Conrov made a capable M.C. and was greatly assisted by> Messrs Appkby, Dickson, W. Lowe and Neil Hodgkinson. Among the ladies, who all looked nice in their various costumes, were Mrs Hargraves, "Frosted Ivy' : Miss W. Creighton, "Ked Cross Nurss"; Miss Irene Waters, "Fairy Qieen"; Misß McKi.iney, "Nigtt'; Mr 3 Appleby, "Spanish Witch"; Miss Jessie Creignton, "Gipsy"; Mrs Ted McKinncy, "New Zealand"; Miss 'l'eenie Dromgool, "Spanish Dancer"; Miss Cissy Waters, "Marguerite"; Miss Woodman, "Union Jack"; Miss Morley, "Dahlia." Among other ladies were; Miss McKay, Mrs Barton, Misses Baker, Miss Bonnie Chalmers, Mrs Allen, Mrs Cooke and Miss Caiu in evening dresß. Among the geuts were: Mr W. Lowe, "'lurk''; Mr Dickson, "Champion Flour"; Mr Neil Hodgkinson, "Ked, White and Blue"; Mr Ted McKioney, "Footballer"; Mr Sid Waters, "Nigger"; Mr P. Chalmers, "Cricketer." Troopers Creighton and Lucas wore kaKhi uniforms, also Mr J. Whattam and Mr Fowler. A number of gentlemen were in evening dress. A gcod supper, including many good things, was supplied by Mr Arkle, of Waiuku, and a pleasant function was brought to a close about 3 o'clock in the morning. Some action should be taken by the settlers in this district to destroy the rabbits, which are very plentiful; some of the residents'are poisoning but it wants all hands to unite and clear them right away, as it is no use only a few poisoning the pests.
