MERCER.
The Waikato Co-operative Dairy Company's Mercer Factory will close for the winter at the end of the present month. Signatures are coming in freely for the petition to obtain a bridge across the Waikato river at Mercer. Exception has been taken by a number of Mercer residents to the decision arrived at by the Franklin County Council in connection with the proposed bridge. In reference to the remarks passed at the County meeting regarding the weekly fees collected by the Maori in charge ot the punt, it is alleged thac such are not a criterion as to the amount of traffic that crosses over the river as large mobs of cattle, and vehicles instead of crossing by means of the punt go down to Tuakau and pass over the Tuakau bridge. It is also said that two horses and a quantity of cream were lost overboard from the punt some tew months past and also, that intending passengers have often to wait on the banks of the river for indefinite periods waiting for the person in charge of the punt to terry them across.-
