SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Schcol Committee for Waiuku, GleoLrcoSr, Aka Aka, Waitargi and Keriotahi schuols took place at Waiuku en Satu'day. There were present: Messrs C. T. Barriball (chairman), S. T. Rcssiter, A. M. Barriball, J. B. Copelat.d, K. Hudson, C. Hcdgkinson, J. Whliama Creasurer), R. Honey and (!. H. Greenhead (secretary) The Education Board advised that tenders had been called for the erection of an additional rcom at Waiuku school.—Mr Kosaiter bandid in for perusal a plan of the proposed work, which showed a room to accommodate 54 pupils, but atter allowing for a corridor, there would be room provided for 40 pupils. The head teacher had informed bim that this would be ample for pretent requirements. The work aUo provided for the erection of'an additional shelter shed, sui'able drainage, and a good footpath around the school. The Board notified the appointment of Miss Udy to Waitangi school. Mr Hoey, head teacher at Aka Aka, applied for a gate to be provided to give access to the school garden from the playground.—Application granted, Mr Hudson to arrange for the work to be done. After discussion as to the necessity for having gorse and blackberry cleared off and around school property at Waiuku, the chairman was deputed to interview the head teacher, Mr Harris, re clearing of same and authorised .to guarantee £5 towards such work, the weeds in future to be kept clear by the head teacher, except on Bchool portion, at his own expense. The head teacher at Aka Aka wrote in reference to the overcrowded state of the school, pointing out the serious position thereby created, which endangered the efficiency of the institution as well as the health of' the children. A petition signed by 38 residents was also forwarded in regard to this matter. —lt was dtcided to send these to the Board with a recommendation that the school be enlarged as the teacher and residents urged. Accounts totalling £l2 8s 9d were passed for payment. The chairman was deputed to ascertain whether the secretary could be paid for his services while being a member of the committee, aa the work involved in looking after stores, etc. was considerable and should have remuneration.
