WAIPIPI.

ANNUAL SPORTS. The annua! athletic sports tcok place on Wednesday, March 17th, in Mr W. Jones' paddock, Wharf road, but a continual downpour of rain marred proceedings. Despite the weather ttere was a large attendance, visitors coming from along the coast, including a launch lead of some 25 from Awhitu. A lengthy programme of twenty odd events was carried through, and, generally speaking, brought cut large fields and exciting finishes. The senior events were well contested and so close were the finishes that the judges (Mr J. McDonald anu Father Skinner) were set a difficult task in picking their men. The high jump was a splendid performance right through, and was engaged in by some high fliers. Ihe ladies' nail driving contest was spirited and produced 26 entries. The officials worked hard and all the events were got off in quick time.

The refreshment booth and shooting gallery were run by Mr Brown, of Waiuku, but weather conditions were rather against business. At the close of the sports a very pleasing function took place in the form of a presentaton to Trooper T. E. Furniss, who was hoine from Trentham on short leave. In

making the presentation Father i Skinner referred to the noble actions of all young fellows in ottering their services to their country. Un i nebalf of the donors and those pre- j sent he «aid it gave hnn great pleasure in handing over to Trooper Furnißß a purse containing £5 J'Ja; which had been collected in a short time.—Trooper Furnias thanked those present for thar kind wishes and generous gift, ,;nd Baid if it was his good luck to reach "the front'' be would eckavour to do hi? duty.
