TUAKAU

The Rev. A. Fitchetr, of the Methodist Home Missionary Society, was farewelled at the anniversary sodal of the Sunday school on Monday night. A large number of parishioners were present, including the ttev. G. Frcst, superintendent of the circuit. A programme of musical items and recitations was given by the Sunday school scholars and the Misses Garland, Hyde, and Revell and Mr E. Revell. Refreshments were supplied and handed round by the ladiee, During the course of the evening the Kev. Fiost referred to the good work done in the parish by Mr Fitchett. Mr Bycroft, on behalf of the members of the circuit, presented Mr Fitchett wiih a handsome marble deck. Every child present was presented with a prize by the Rev. G. Frost. Mr Bycroft, superintendent of the Sunday school, remarked that the conduct of the scholars during the year had been excellent.

A meeting was held in the Tuskau hall on Monday evening last to form a local branch of the Farmers' Union Mounted Rifle Club. Mr A. H. Tapper presided. The branch was duly formed and eighteen active members and rive honorary members joined. The following executive was elected:— Mr Dynes Fulton, president; Mr W. L. Young, secretary; committee, Messrs English, Free, Woolley, Tapper and W. Flrret and officers ex-officio. The Committee are taking the necessary steps to have the club accepted by the Government and to procure rifles. The district is to be inspected to find the most suitable site for a rifle range. A meeting of the Tuakau branch of the Reform League was held at Tuakau on Saturday evening last. Mr Dynes Fulton presiding. In the absence of the secretary, Mr H. H. D. Wily was appointed secretary pro tem. The chairman feelingly referred to the death of Mr Bollard, late member for Edec, and the following resolution was passed, all standing: "That this meeting wishes to convey its sincere sympathy to the family of the late Mr John Bollard in their ead bereavement." Mr Wily was instructed to convey the same to Mrs Bollard, senr., and to Mr R. F, Bollard, M.P. All accounts from the election were passed for payment, satisfaction being expressed that receipts and expenses balanced. Considerable discussion took place re the proposed war tax. After sn interesting debate the following resolution was passed and ordered to be forwarded to the Prime Minister: "That at a meeting of the Tuakau branch of the Keform League, held at Tuakau, it was unanimously decided that an increase in the graduated income tax was the fairest way to raise additional taxation for war purposes." The Education Board have apparently revoked their previous decision to enlarge the Tuakau South school and have now issued instructions whereby 27 children now attending the Tuakau school are to be transferred to the Harrisville school. These children are resident in the township and although the distance for them to either school is about the same, objection is taken by parents to their attendance at Harrisville by reason of the necessity of crossing the railway line amid the danger of shunting operations. The transfer will relieve the overcrowding at the Tuakau school as the numbers will be reduced there to 90 pupils, whilst the Harrisville school will be brought up tu its full compliment of 90 scholars.
