MERCER.
An er.joyable dance was held .ier the auspices of the Mercer Ulee Club in the Public Hall on Wednesday evening last. Fully 25 couples were present, and a lengthy list of dances was gone through before the close of the evening. Meedames Bush, Valentine and the Misses Neilson, Frost and Cardcn assisted at the piano. The dance was bo successful that the Glee Club have decided to hold a similar affair in a fortnight's time. A letter has been received by the Waikato River Board from the Prime Minister, Bight Hon. W. F. Maseey, expressing bis regret at being unable to attend the proposed visit to the Waikato river at the present juncture, owing to stress of business. Mr Massey added that he would be pleased to visit the river in company with members of the Board later. A later message was also been received from the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, stating his inability to be present at the visit, and mentioning that he also would be able to accept the offer later. The chairman of the Board has deemed it advisable in the meantime to cancel the proposed visit until certain work has been finished in the Mioro Bay. Messrs E. Hallet and C. Davis, of the Waikato Shipping Company, have purchased a new 32 foot launch, which has done service for some few months past as a tender for the cable steampr "Iris," and intend using it on the Waikato river for touring purposes, under the command of Captain Ragg. The new lauDch is one of the smartest and most Eervieeabie yet Been on the river, beitig tilted with an 18 h.p, engire, and only drawing two feet of water ehould allow for the plying of the launch on the Waikato when it is at its lowest.
