£50,000,000 in War Orders
entrenching tools from U.S. •'TO ICELAND."
It is estimated that already more than £50,000,000 has been spent in I the United States for supplies by the warring nations of Europe, says a recent Reuter message from New York. One New York banker reports orders, to pay out £3,000,000 for various goods. Some industrial concerns are considering enlarging Iheir plants to respond to increased demands. The E. W. Bliss Company, of Brooklyn, which makes projectiles, reports that it is unable to handle all the business which is offered to it; and the same condition exists at the Tindel-Morris Company's plant in Pennsylvania, where 2,500,000 shrapnel cases are being made for France. One particularly peculiar order is for £200,000 worth of entrenching tools to be shipped to Iceland from Pittsburg. Their further destination has not yet been announced. Orders booked in a week try New England shoe manufacturers amount to more than 2,000,000 pairs. The Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation, of Quincy, Mass., reports an order for the immediate construction of 20 submarines with an expenditure of about £2,000,000. The destination of this order is unknown.
