The remainder of a.draft of prime beef cattle, belonging to Mr Given, of Pollok, which averaged £l6 15s at last week's NewZoaland Lian Company's Westfield market, were disposed of privately on Friday last by the manager of the N Z Loan Compiny, who motored with a buyer to Mr Given's " Greenhill " property. The visitor bought 95 head of beef, the price boing £ls per head. The usual monthly meeting of the Pukekohe West Road Board was held in Mr H. G. K. An increase in the salary of Pukekohe's Town Clerk is to be p-oposod by the Mayor at the next Council meeting. His Worship stated at the C >uncil meeting on Wednesday that the Town Clerk, who had very responsible work to perform, secured less salary than cither the Foreman of Works or Waterworks Foreman. In his opinion the Town Clerk wa3 underpaid and lie thoroughly deserved a larger alary than he was now getting.
The secondary department of the Pukekohe District High School is very properly regaining popularity. A little time ago owing to dwindling attendance, less than a dozen pupils being present last term, the secondary department was in imminent danger of being dosed, During the recent holidays the School Committee sent out a circular to parents in the district pointing out that the prestige of the town would suffer if deprived of the higher form of education. The response has been satisfactory and some 20 scholars are on the roll this term. Soma exciting scenes were witnessed in the vicinity nf the Pukekohe railway bridge in the early part cf last evening, when several mobs of horses were being taken away on the conclusion of the horse sale that had been in progress. It was no uncommon occurrence for one or more of the steeds to evade the control of the drovers in charge and to gallop down the road towards th 3 station yardi or into King street, pursued at a wild pace by the custodians. Although there was a good deal of pedestrian tiaffic about at the time fortunately iiO ore was run down, but tha practice of driving untetheied nurses in the main thoroughfares of the town constitutes a public danger and should be stopped by the authorities.
