SPORTS AND PASTIMES.

The bowling game at Waiuku gresn has not been greatly in favour of late. Whether it be the dry weather and the bad state of the green, or the holiday period and the consequent absence of several enthUßiasts, or whatever may be the influencing cause, the fact remaias that bowling has not had much attention locally. Although by no means a new club little provision has been made in regard to securing an efficient water supply, with the result that the greens became almost unplayable until the recent rainfall Competitions have not yet started and are seldom mentioned. Last Thursday bowlers numbered a full half-dozen, although picnic attractions doubtless accounted for the absence of some players. There is certainly need of a little more enthusiasm.

On the croquet lawn there has been a fairly consistent number of players enjoying their favourite game. Competition for the "Stars" has been fairly keen arc! has produced some excellent play. The tennis players, though far too numerous for tbe one court, have had some fairly good practice. It seems more or less farcical to try and encourage tbe tenins game under the conditions prevailing. The asphalt court has been improved somewhat bv a coat of tar, but the lack of room to take a ball on the back lines, also on the side line, is a serious drawback. The grass lawn, apart from its condition, is even worse for the back line nuisance.

A few competitions such as handicap singles, club championships, etc., could be advantageously introduced, if there were any prizes offering. The ladder competition, which has been under way tome weeks, has added some interest to the play, but had the players been placed instead of drawn the interest would have been far greater.

Some of the tennis players were recently expecting a treat by way of a club match. The club owes a visit to Mauku, but the contest has now been postponed to a future date. It is useless to trouble about club matches, however, when there is not even one full court available. At least two gocd courts are necessaiy to entertain a visiting team, and until a club in Waiuku is so equipped tennis will never attain its true position among summer pastimes.
