CHRISTMAS AT THE SHOPS.
As usual at Christmas time the shops of Pukekohe present a very gay appearance and the fullest possible opportunity is offered by local traders for the purchase locally of ' good cheer " for the festive season, whilst wants and requirements in the way of the acquisition of suitable presents both for adults and children are also fully catered for. Gold and silver articles, either of high or moderate value, are in good array at the respective jewellery establishments of Messrs W. Wright, G. W. Goldsmith and C. E. Lushor, the last-named also stocking phonographs and their accessories. The wants of the inner man (or woman") are well provided for in the *hape of prime joints, etc, of ox beef and hogget mutton by both Messrs J. Adams and Sons and Messrs Roulston Bros.
Dainty confectionery of all kinds, including the ever-popular Christmas cakes,' can be secured at Mr J. H. Bartrom's establishment in King street, whilst in the Premier Hall buildings Mr Wddo makes a specialty of lollies of first-class makes.
The extensive premises of both Mr W. Roulston and Messrs F. Perkins and Co. aro replete with household provisions of all kinds, and the purchaser cannot get a wider range of goods of various lines or better value for money at aDy city establishment. Groceries, Christmas fruits, etc., also form a feature of the contents of Mr A. O. Wollett's "Busy Store." " Drapery, millinery and mercery " are the leading lines on display at the up-to-date premises owned by Mr Mills ("The Economic Store "), and Messrs W. G.lßhotbolt and Co., and Mr W. Roulston's store are likewise also to the front in these departments. Messrs Shotbolt and Co.'s fine large establishment houses a stock that will satisfy anyone's wants, whilst Mr Mills' " Economic Store" has recently undergone enlargement, and the additional floor space secured provides the means of an easy inspection of his Christmas Bazaar, which, in addition to articles of clothing and footwear, contains toys in great profusion. In millinery and drapery the Misses Ramsay can suit all classes and their taste and skill can be depended upon. Mr Owen McLean (O'Connor's Buildings) specialises for men's hoisery and mercery and his window display is eminently attractive. Gifts for the "sterner sex" can be widely selected from Mr McLean's big stock. Toys of all description and desirable picture books for the rising generation, together with the latest productions of om - leading novelists for adult reading, ai-e included in the goods offered to the public at the Bookery, under Mr C. Roadley's proprietorship. Altogether this establishment is decidedly up-to-date date, and Mr Roadley deserves his full share of public patronage. Messrs R. Miller and Co. and Mr W. R. Grace aie both tailors of repute, and clothing orders can with confidence be plaqgd with either, lit and style being guaranteed. The* latest and best in footwear can be seen and purchased at the premises respectively owned by Mr J. T. Nelson and Mr H. King.
Leather goods of all descriptions, specially selected for Christmas presents, are in great variety at Mr W. T. Jones' and Messrs H. Dell and Son's establishments.
Mr J. A. Comrie has a large stock of bicycles available for purchase. Perfumery and the usual other accompaniments of a pharmacy make a bold show at Mr W. Townson's premises, whilst smokers' wants can be fully supplied by Mr Geo. Armstrong.
