PAPAKURA.
TOWN BOARD MEETING.
The usual monthly meeting of the Papakuia Town Board was held in the Board office en Monday, December 7th; present: Mr A. Willis, in the chair, Messrs Jones, Crawford, Campbell and Stuart. An apology was received from Mr Meara for bis absence through illness. The Manukau County Council wrote in reference to tha licensing fee charged to the Town Board, accepting the Board's explanation that they had already paid the fee to the Franklin County Council. A letter was received from Mr McCormick, undertaking to clear the willows from the creek on his property, the work to be completed in six weeks' time. A letter was received from the Prime Minister (Mr Mawey), stating that the Government grants were available for the Great South road and McLennao's hill.—ln regard to McLennan'a hill, the Government grant amounted to £IOO. which required to be subsidised £ fur £, and as the Drury Road Board refused to contribute their share, it was decided to leave the matter over.
Mr Willis drew attention to the state of the Boundary road, and after discussion it was decided to refer the matter to the municipal authorities for a ruling. The Health Authority drew the Board's attention to the saleyards. They stated that they had made two inspections recently and found the yards in a very dirty condition, and they considered that the flooring and channelling wanted attending to.—The Board decided to aek the authorities to compel tbe Loan and Mercantile Co. to keep the yards clean; and as the Company had three or four years to run on their lease it would be necessary for suitable flooring to be put down, and proper channelling made, so that the yards could be swept out after every Bale. The matter of employing a permanent man on the roads was referred to by Mr Campbell, who thought tbe time was ripe for such an experiment, as he considered the Board could save money by it—lt was decided to leave the matter over in the meantime.
Mr Macintosh made an offer to the Board of 15 to 20 yards of shell for binding purposes, and the Board agreed to accept the offer and try the experiment on the Great South road.
It was decided to write to tbe Franklin County Council re filling hollow on western side of Great South road, and to ask the county engineer to report as to estimate. The tender of Messrs Harrison'and Gillard for formation and extension of King Edward street was accepted, the amount being £49 17s; and Mr Lever's tender for the formation of Chapel street, £39 10s, was also accepted. Mr Waterman asked for the use of Village green for grazing purposes, and it was decided to lease him the green, at a rental of 6s per week.
Mr Jones mentioned to the Board that a movement was on foot to form the township into a borough, and he thought it would be wise for the Board to go into the matter, as it evolved a big question.—lt was decided to appoint a committee, composed of Messrs Willis, Jones and Crawford to consider the problem arid to report to tbe Board later on.
