MERCER.
Mr hurness, Social Democratic candidate for Raglan electorate, addressed the Mercer electors in the Town hi all on Monday, 16th inst. Mr Fumess's speech dealt mainly with his scheme of how all public debts and mortgages could be wiped out of existence by the issue of legalised paper money by a National Bank against New Zealand land. The idea, in Mr Fumess's opinion, was quite workable. At the conclusion Mr Furntss received a vote of thanks for his address. Mr G. E. Morgon acted as chairman. A meeting was held on Tuesday, 17th inst., by the No-License party, in the Mercer Hall. Rev. Evans, of Huntly, and Mr Vincent, of Ngaruawahia, spoke and both gentlemen received a good bearing.
Mr George Morgon bas purchased a new six-cylinder Hudson motor car.
The newly constituted Town Board formally came into existence yesterday, Thursday, when the election of five members for seats on the Board took place. The following was the result of the polling:— Elected : G. E. Morgan, 52 ; H. S. Valentine, ol ; S. Carter, 46, M. Gallery, 39 ; C. Watkinson, 28. Unsuccessful : A. C. Tribe, 24 ; C. Roose, 22 ; H. Bilderbeck, 21. Mr AV. B. Thomson, Liberal Candidate for Raglan, appeared before the electors of Mercer in the Town Ilall last night. At the close of liia speech a vote cf thinks and confidence was accorded. At the conclusion of the address given by Mr Thomson, the Liberal candidate, list night, Mr 0. Morgan, on behalf of the citizens of Mercer, presented Mr A. Pickett, late licensee of the Railway hotel, with a handsome 18ct gold Waltham lever watch, suitably inscribed. Mr Morgan wished Mr Pickett all success. Mr Pickett suitably replied.
