FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following is the completion of the report of the last meeting of the Franklin County Council : LAMP-LIGHIER AT WAIUKU. E. P. Chandler, Waiuku, tendered
bis resignation as lamp-ligbter at Waiuku; he had got Mr Leech to do the lighting as from the 6th »nst.—Letter is to be sent to the Waiuku Town Board. MANUKAU HAKBOUR WHARVES The Auckland Harbour Board
notified that in connection with the
various wharves in the Manukau harbour it had been decided that no further action be taken until the Franklin County Council further communicates with the Board. Cr Renall said he had protested
before and would protest again against these wharves being handed over. So far as Waiuku wharf was concerned he had nothing to do with that. But at le 'lora they were suffering inconvenience. The settlers there were prepared to put their hands into their pockets if the £l3 odd that was to the credit of the wharf weie handed over. The people were up in arms. Kather than pay whsrfage the settlers preferred to do their o*n vork. Cr Higginson thought the best thing the Council could do was to allow the Harbour Board to take the wharves over straight away. The chairman said he had been told that Waiuku would have to pay for the improvements there, but that there would be no extra charge on the other wharves.
Cr Henry believed that the Waiau Pa whaif would be best under the control of the Harbour Board. Cr Renall wanted to know what the Boaid was going to do; his
uEttlera did not want to get into a worse position than they were no*v. So tar as the Waiuku wharf was
concerned that matter was left to the Waiuku Town Board; action in connection with the other wharves was deferred. THAI AWHITU ROAD TROUBLE. O. Ridgley, E. E. Murffitt, R. P. Mackenzie, T. M. Thompson, P. Kaihau, H. Kaihau, J. Ridgley, asked that the road I°adwg to the property of Octavius Ridghy be opened. The road was included in the farm of Mr J. T. Jones and the said J. T. Jones was asked to fence the road along his boundary. "Ihe same thing again,' and "they're stickers all light" were a couple of expressions which greeted
the document. Cr Renall said he did not want to be haid on Mr Joms. In the first place the petitioners asked that the obstruction across the toad be removed. The County allowed a gate to be put up, but that was objected to. The question was whether Mr Jolcs should be allowed to erect a proper gate or: the centre of the road; that was all he should be asked to do at present. The chairman said it was possible that after putting up a proper gat?, with straining posts for the fence, Jones might be forced to remove it. Cr Higginacn said that the quarrelling had gone so far that nothing but fencing would meet the case. Cr Campbell said the road was no more good than a fifth wheel to a cuach. Cr Renall: That's all rot. Cr Campbell: It is unnecessary and the trouble is only due to a personal quarrel betwec-n two men. He related what he had been told by Waiuku people who knew the circumstances. The chairman said there were many such closed roads as this in Ihe cour.ty which spiteful people could force open. But if the roads worth keeping closed the Council should get rents from them. Cr Renall moved: Either a legal gate must be erected or that the obstructions be removed. This motion was carried A WRONG TRACK TAKEN.
The Government district engineer wrote regarding Price's deviation, Ararimu, saying that the road aa marked out on the county engineer's plan was not the road that the Department bad laid out. The deviation they laid out was through section No. 205, Education reserve. Cr Flanagan said this was a three-mile deviation. A portion had been done and there was another grant of £2OO for this three-quarters of a mile. After looking over it the engineer came to the same conclusion as the speaker, that the deviation could not be done for this amount, to»say nothing of the fercing. But if the amount were spent cn the old ruad it would make a very good road for all the traffic there was there. It was left with the county engineer to confer with the district engineer.
