SPENDING THE "THIRDS."

An Old Dispute Revived. The difference of opinion as to ( where " thirds " should he spent is perpetually recurring. It cropped up again at the last meeting of tie Franklin County Council. " Thirds " represent the third of the rents paid by Crown tenants, which "thirds'' are paid to local bodies interested for expenditure upon roads, etc , serving the Crown-rented properties. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands saying that he was in roceipt of a complaint from Mr A. McNeil, of Moumoukai, to the effect that it was proposed to spend the "thirds" away from his proporty. The Commissioner pointed out that the " thirds " must be spent for the benetit of the properties from which they come. The inference from the letter was that the Commissioner had decided that those "thirds" must be spent adjacent to Mr McNeil's property. Cr Campbell, representative for the Tlunua riding, said he did not conceive that correct representations had been made regarding the position. This letter was in entire contradiction to the situation as it was explained to him by the Lands Offioe The matter was referred fb Cr. Campbell for further enquiry and consideration.
