PAPAKURA.

METHODIST CHUKCH

The filth anniversary of the Papakura Methodist Church took place on September 27th, 1914. The services were well at'ended. The Kev. W. S. Potter preacbed at the morning and afternoon services. At the latter solos were sung by the Misses Kimmer, Brodie, and Johnson. The evening service was taken by the Kev. C. H. Garland, Principal of the Theological College, Auckland. Miss Kimmer also sang a solo at thi< scrvic - .

On Wednesday, 30th September, the annual soiree was held in the public ball, tbe tables beicg presided over by the lady members of the congregation. In the evening a large public meeting was presided over by Mr J. Watkinson, of Auckland. .Speakers: Revs. Gosnell and Potter. A satisfactory report of the year's work was given by the secretary, Mr G. D. Smith. Vocal solus were sung by Mrs Vescoe, Miss Higgott and Mr G. Higgott, an Organ solo by Mr Bickerton, and a recitation by Miss Higgott. The evening concluded with a hearty vote of thanks by the Rev. W. S Potter.

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Tbe Presbyterians ot Papakura are to be congratulated on their very fine, up-to-date new organ, just purchased for their church, one of the latest Karn Canadian organs, consisting of two manuals with pedal bass, and ten stops, etc., the whole enclosed in a quartered sawn oak case. The price paid was £73 10s. Of this amount £SO was raised in one week, the balance being lent by a resident, which will be paid off as soon as possible. v A dedicatory service was held in the church on Friday, October 2nd, consisting of a short service, organ and vocal eolos; all of which was much appreciated by the very large audience. Vocal items were given by the following friends from Auck land:-Miss Barr, whs rendered most tastefully "Nearer My God to Thee" and "My God, I Thank Thee"; Mr Harold Piper, whose fine voice was heard to advantage in "0 Divine Redeemer":, and Mr Evan McCormick, who sang very feelingly "Thou'rt Passing Hence, My Brother" and "Crossing the Bar." Several very effective organ solos were rendered by the organist, Mr Bickerton, which displayed the sweetness of the various stops. The accompaniments were played by Mr Piper and Mr Bickerton. An offertory was taken up in aid of the organ fund, and the National Anthem concluded the recital.

Special' services were also held on Sunday, vocal solos being rendered morning and evening by Miss Adams, of Auckland. Several of the senior members of the Presbyterian Bible Class undertook to "spring clean" the church, so row with its fresh coat of white paint outside and daik red roof, new picket gate, and the fence renovated, the property looks decidedly better.

CRICKET. The cricket season opened on October 3rd. The opening match, Married versus Single, was witnessed by a large number of spectators. H. McCormick (single) won the toss from D. W. Jones (married); the latter's team batting first and being responsible tor 188 runs.

The "singles" only had time for two wickets for 94 runs, and the match was thus drawn. The scores were as follows:

Married.-C. Waugh 28, H. Bhove 2, S. Willis 3, J. 0. Bennett 46, A. Evans 4, D. W. Jones 1, B. Mcrringtun 12, D. Wilson 24, H. Lodge 41, W. Crichton 7, A. Currell 3, J. A. Mackenzie not out 1; extras 14; total, 188. McCormick took 7 wickets, Tatton 2, and Geo. Wilson one.

■Single.—J. Tatton 20, Harold Wilson 15, U. McComick not out 51; extras, 8; total for two wickets 94. * Merrington and Lodge took one wicket each. Umpires, E. D. McLcnnan and R. W. Wilson.

The teams dined together in the evening at the Globe hotel, after which several toasts were honoured; musical items by Mr D. Wilson. Mr D. W. Jones has very generously .donated a trophy, to be awarded to the beet fieldsman during the season.

The match next Saturday will be JBapakura against Remuera.
