WAIUKU RAILWAY LEAGUE
The Mauku Branch. A committee meeting of the Mauku branch of the Waiuku Railway League was held in the Patumahoe hall on Mrnday evening. I i the absence ot the president, the vice-president, Mr J. B. Goldsworthy, presided. The secretary, Mr W. Fin lay, reported having had a communication from the Glcnbiook League, they having agieed to support Mabku's request to the Government to have a substantial amount put on the Estimates to proceed with tic construction works.
The following reply wns received from the Prime Mini-ter (Kt. Hon. W. F. Ma:se>i ii re-pome to the resolution passed at the last meeting of the League:—"l beg to ac- | knowledge receipt of jour letter of | the 29th ult., forwarding copy of . your resolution passed by your \ branch of the Waiuku Railway Leagut-, urging that a substantial grant be placed on the Public Works Estimates for the Waiuku branch railway and, in reply, to state that I shall have pleasure in making representations in support of the icqutst to my colleague, the Hon. the Minister of t'uolic Works, and have 1 the same placed on the Supplementary Estimates." The secretary explained that this meeting had bean called to consider a petition that had been Eent from a number of settlers requesting a change in the site of the tirst station on the new line, and to know if the League would support the petitioners' request. The petition read as follows" We, the undersigned settlers of Pukekohe West, who take an interest in the Waiuku railway and who wish to see the station put were it will be of the greatest use to the largest number of peuple, beg respectfully to 6ubmit for your considertion section No. 6, owned by Mrs Beloe and situated abcut miles from the main line, and immediately contiguous to ,Cox's road, as the most eligible spot for a station to suit the convenience of the whole district. — Signed by M. J. Rogers and 30 others." After some discussion it was pro posed by Mr Cmpe, and seconded by Mr Pleydell, "That the president be requested t) interview the Engineer-in-Charge, Mr Hall-Jones, regarding the matter and if it be found practicable to establish a station on the site mentioned to support the request." The discussion showed, however, that the committee were favourable to ieaving these matter? generally to the more experienced knowledge of the engineer, he being a thoroughly relibal2 man and one competent to judge the grades, etc., and a man who would do his best tor the cialrict ten rally.
