OUR BURIAL GROUNDS

" We nothing extenuate, nor set down auoht in malice."

At the September meeting of the Franklin County Council, Cr Lyons referred to the Mercer cemetery, saying that it was conducted in the usual happy-go-lucky manner- which was to say, we presume, that it is managed with little or no method at all. We regret to say that that 13 the case with practically all the put lie cemeteries in this district. In Pukekohe, since its formation into a borough, our cemetery conditions have been reviewed—and very unfortunate conditions they proved to b?. Originally the graves appear to have been dig without the slightest regard for alignment, so that cow some of the graves are crossed by the footpaths, some of the burials are partly in and partly out of their allotments, and a good number have had to be marked "unknown."' We hope that the different districts will take prompt measures in connection with their several cemeteries so as to avoid getting into the state of confueion with which Pukekohe found itself laced. It i 9 most desirable that a surveyor should be got to lay of the cemetery, but if funds cannot be raised tor this purpose then some practical man should be got to carefully measure the distances, iknote the paths and the line along which the buriaii should be made. A little forethought now will save a lot of anxiety and possibly some heartaches later on. We hope that every district which the "limes" covers will give heed to this friendly warning.
