MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT CLASS.
*• The Shaksperian evening at the Mutual Improvement Class, which was held on Monday, provtd very attractive. The attendance was well over a hundred, ar.d the various items wee of an educative ar.d eojoyable order. Mr C. J. West was in the chair. The programme was of wide variety, and included vocal acd musical items, readings, recitations and Shaksperian dialogue. At the outset Rev. Cable read a brief biographical sketch of the career of the great poet and dramatist, which served as a fitting introduction to the presentation of p rtions of his literature. The tiial ecene from "The Merchant of Venice," depicting Shylock's revengeful persistency in his efforts to secure rii pound ot flesh, was very eli'e p tively done, the various characters bung well sustained. Mr C. Hosking made n capital Shylock, whilst other roles were filled with considerable aptitude. Another successful presentation was the love scene from "Much Ado About Nothing," which Rev. Cable and Miss Woodward enacted as Benedick and Beatrice in a manner that met with the hearty approval cf the audience, and had to be repeated to satisfy the popular rsquest. Various readings from the great author's works, a recitation by Mr C. J. Hosking, and other dialogue items made up a pleas'int and successful evening.
