That Absurd Letter.
TO THE EDITOR
Sir, — In your is-ue of September Ist appears a letter over the signature of Liberal addressed from Patumalne. This letter ia sufficiently ar:d commendably dealt with in your editorial of tame date, ar.d therefore requires no more comment as to its tenor and absurdity. The fact, howeve*, that it is addressed from Patimahoa is very annoying to our pcopk-, as castirg a stigma on our own district, and I have been asked by several ot tha residents to write to your paper repudiating the inference that the writer is a Patumahoe resident. Although the Patumahoc pcopla do not claim any great wisdom they do claim being above such imbecility as produced the letter in question. I am, etc., J. HENRY.
Patumahoe, 4th September, 1914. [Evidently Mr Henry is iot in the confidence of his fellow-Liberals. It does njt follow that because one person writes a stupiil letter a stigma rests on the whola community. Our corresponded is not in a position to "repudiate the inference that the wri'er is a Patumahoe resident," but as Mr Henry appaiently wishes to dissociate himself from the authorship tff the letter we are making room for his communication. At the same ! time we do not intend this to establish a precedent Readers are 1 constantly "guessing'' at the authorship of letters which appear : over per.-names and if everybody who may be "suspect" were to write a tepudiaDon our columns would soon be Hooded.—Ed. |
