ARBOR DAY.
On Tuesday, 21st inst., in lieu of Arbor Day, 15th inat., interesting work waa cariied out at the PukeKoha District High School. The children ohtair.eJ from various sources large numbers of trees and ferns and carried them to school in anticipation of a day outside. At mid-day the visiting agricultural instructor briefly addressed the assembled school, dwelling upon the evils of deforestation and the duty of all people to care for the interests of their future progeny and to plant trees which might replace those that are being destroyed. He gave a practical demonstration of the method of tree planting by setting a rimu tree between the buildings and, empowered by the Education Board's remit, caused the children to be granted a halfholiday. As the day was not suitable for workirg the soil, the share of the children was deferred until yesterday, when many native and imported trees were planted in various parti of the grounds. It is toped that these will take root for apart from their beautifying aspect, the shslter they will give is much needed in the school ground.
