KARAKA ROAD BOARD.

The July Meeting.

There were present on Saturday: Messrs Batty (chairman), Sulton, Glasscn, Johnston. CADDY'S CROSSING.

The chairman ard Mr Schlaepfer, the committee s.t up, had met Mr Bagge, the district railway engineer, in regard 10 his suggestion that the road, familiarly known as Caddy's, should be taken through the

Methodist property to the railway line to permit if a hetter grade to the crossing than th2 pr.sent one being secured. An overhead bridge was to be put in and the engineer suggested that the Board contribute to the cost of torming and grading and the Department would piy for the land. In view of the fact that a steeper grade on Caddy's hill wtuld remain the representatives of the Board did not see that the deviation would be of any groat benefit to them, and recommended that no steps be Uken in the matter. Recommendation adopted. HINGAIA BRIDGE.

The chairman reported that the land which was required for the approach to the Hingaia bridge, and which it was proposed to take under the Public Works Act, wrs under the jurisdiction either of the County Council or the Drury Road Board. The chairman of the Drury Road Board was perfectly prepared to assist the Karaka Road Board in taking the land. It was suggested that the Drury Koad Board should authorise the Karaka Board to take the necessary steps. The chairman reported that the application for the £IOOO loan for the I'apakura bridges had been sent in to the Department. ROAD WORKS.

The chairman considered the Hoard should take stepß to get tht ir grading work for the coming season in hand. He thought the Hoard should secure their own scoop and plant to be in a position to do a portion of the work on the by-ro'ds in the early part of the rummer. Members approved of the suggestion, and the chairman and Mr Schlaepfer were empowered to secure plant and make arrangements for grading roads early in the summer. CASEY'S QUARRY. The chairman reported that Cr Flanagan, the county engineer, and himself inspected Casey's quarry, and the county engineer suggested making another test. He thought the Board should consult the men who had tested the quarry, and if the part reftrred to by the engineer had not been tested it should be done.— The matter was left in the hands of the chairmai to attend to. WAIUKU-DRUHY ROAD. At a recent meeting a letter from Cr Henry in regard to road formation on the Waiuku-Drury road was read and forwarded to the Board's engineer. To this Mr Gannon sent the following reply:— "Mr Henry's letter in relation to formation work that is being carried out by Messrs Malteon Bros., at the far end of the Drury-Waiuku road on behalf of the Karaka Road Board, has my attention. The read is in pratically a straight line and is graded. The formation has not been kept in the centre of tho road tor two conclusive reasons. Firstly, the excessive cost; secondly, that it is advisable from an engineering point of view to keep the line of road as far as practicable upon the Bolid and not the filling. Mr Henry's criticism was made without personal inspection and before the work was completed, and when it was of necessity in a rough state. Since he had personally inspected it and he informed me that he had found it was rot so bad after all. Mr Henry also appears to be unaware that the contract is for three miles ot formation and the contract price is the exceedingly small pum of £265. To carry out the suggestion made in his letter would have involved the expenditure of at least as mary thousands as I am spending hundreds.''

It wag decided to forward a copy of the letter to Cr Henry. CRAWFORD'S BRIDGE.

Mr Sutton referred to the very bad cundition of the new formation at the approaches to Crawford's bridge. —lt was decided to put down fascines.
