OUR BAD ROADS.
Comprehensive Scheme Suggested.
To Be Considered By Borough Council.
"At the lait meeting the proporal j to raise a loan to concrete King street lather took me by surpme," remarktd Cr Pcllock at Wednesday night's meeting of the Borough Council. Continuing, he said that it had been staed that ihe upkeep cost £2OO a year and this money was practically wasted. This was quite true. But were r.ot othet r;ads in the to;ough in the tame position? Me advocated tutting all the main roflds in order and settling the matter. The Council hud borrowed £BOO for West street. During two years £SOO Lad been spent and the road was wuse to-day than when they start d. The money spent was wasted. He thought the Council should put before the ratepayers a comprehensive scheme to put all the principal roads in good order. If the ratepayers rejected it, then they could not blame the Council if they had bad roads.
The Mayor: How much money will you want, £50,000? Cr Pollock: I don't know. Continuing, he urged the importance of putting the main roads io good order.
Cr Comrie agreed with Cr Pollock, and was glad to see him bring this matter forward. It was impossible to put Puni, West acd other roads in gocd order out of the rates. A committee should be set up to report what roads should be included.
The Mayor said he was in accord with the suggestion. "But,'' he added jocosely, "if we don't look out we'll have the ratepayers after us with revolvers." Cr Pollock: Well the position is we must either block traffic or do something. The Wo-ks Committee were authorised to present a report at the special meeting to be held on Wednesday night as to the roads which should be included.
