THE TOWN BAND.

" H e nothing estenualf, nor set down auqhl in malice."

During the contest for the Mayoralty of Pukekohe, it will be rerr.emhered, ! a strong point was made with the opposing candidates as to whether or not they would support a pro- ; posal fcr the Borough Council to grant a Bubsidy towards the main- , tenanee of the Town Band. This matter has net altogether been lost sight of.- A committee appointed . by the Borough Council has met the representatives of the band and discussed the proposals, and it is understood that the committee will report to the Council ou Wednesday night ntxt. We do not know what ; the natute or the report will be, but at this juncture we would like to repeat what we have said before on two or three occasions, that the ! Puktkohc borough should do all it ; can for the Town Band. It is sugi gested that the borough should devote | £25 per annum from its general funds to the ta-d. Allowirg that there are 1500 people in the borough that sum woul I work out at four- : pence per head per year. We thir.k 1 this is an altogether price to pay for p:ittirg such a valuable institution upon a sound footing. Nor would the boruuh as I a whole ba much, if any, worse off financially by the expenditure, because the band in a year could i make perhaps as much in engagej ments. At present, in such cc- : casions as the Shows, costly music I has to ba imported from Auckland. ihere ia no finer draw fjr a town I than a iirst-clafs band and the i service it would render in ad vert Ling this locality would in itself ! repay the borouyh fcr the sulsidy which it is proposed should be paid. In adJr.ion to this £25 we would like to see a supporting list of Band Patro.is prepared. Some standard should be aimed at, eay fitty, each one of this fifty to give £1 a year to the band funds. If the organisation were established on suund financial lines a competent bandmaster could be ergag=d-acd without competence and enthusiasm the best results cannot be obtained. We trust that the Borough Council will meit the band generously and that a vigoious effort will be rnaJo to get the institution going again The musicjl tale, t is at hand: | instruments, music, and materials are available. It merely needs a 111 tie cash cc-cperaticn to reconstruct the band and make it of real muiical benefit to its members and an a-ti:tic credit to this town an J district.
