TUAKAU TOWNSHIP.

Town District Recommended.

By The Commissioners.

Messrs and Morgan, the Commissioners appointed to enquire corceri ing the ;ir!vi ahlenesa nf formit k a Town District for Tuakr.u, have f> rwarded the following report to His ExcflUncy the Governor: "Mav it rlcase \\.ur Excellency,— "Acting upon a warrant issued under your h?n:l dattd lHth day of Manh, l!) 14, to enquire aid report upon the preposil to foini an nea contiguous to the Tuakuu railway etation a Town District, we have the honour to report that on the Ist day of May, 191-1, we held an ir.quiry in ihe Tuakau Public Hall, which had been duly advertised in the local paper. There was an attendance of about :)0 nf those interested, and n keen interest was taken in the proceedings. A great deal of evidence was taken, and al-hough time was a considerable difference of opinion as to the best boundaries, there was almost complete unanimity in favour of the formation of a town district A little fear appeared to exist amongst some of tluse who gave evidence in respect to the liability cf a county rat? bring levied until the district had attained Ihe reqiisit: population to enable it to ba free from such rate, but a representative cf the Franklin County wbs present and explained that the County was qiite h favour of the district being formed, and would offer every facility to enable them to manage their own affairs

nnd sperd all th° rate* collected. "Some of those giving evidence sere cf o; iiiion that the town restrict ehoul I extend right to the

WaiKato river, on the ground lha it would take in more prisen pcvjulatiop. While not approving o that su?ecs.ion, in that the distric would b2 straggling, awkward am unsjitabie in shape, we are o opinion that the proposed boundari? could with advantage be amender by exte di-g towards the river a far is Collins' orchard and home stead ar.d shortening the distinct towards Whangarati. This wil take in more cf the land that ha: already been subdivided, embraci more of the present population, slil keep the district compact, and wil not give an undue length of the mail river road to be maintained by thi Town Board. "Having made full enquiry ard i cartful inspection of the district we b;g to recommeni that a Towr District be foimed. ' [The amendments proposed to be made in the original area describee have already been published in th< "Times."]
