Engineer's Report.
At Thursday's meeting of the Franklin County Council the county engineer Lr HcArthur reported as follows:
"Pukekohe-Waiuku road.—Mr P. Brady's contract for eupplv and delivery of metal for repairs to the above road between Mauku boundary and Waitangi hill. Abcut 450 cubic yards of stone has been delivered on to the side of road and everything is in readii c s to start crushing and carting. "During the month a contract was let for carting 400 cubic yards ct broken metal for repairs to the Pukekohe-Waiuku road in Mauku ricing. When these contracts are completed, together with contract let to Mi Parry for supply of metal for patching on the Waiuku end, the through rozd should be in passable repair.
"Puni road.—The contract for carti-g metal is now nea in? cornpi. tiua. The road fr. m borough boundary to Puni school has been repaired ad pitched and is now in fairly g(ol o.der. "Puia Pura road.—237 cubic yardß of metal has been broken at foot of Shipherd's hill with the idea of metalling rosd along the flat shculd the formation he in a fit state to receive same. Up to the present it would have bsen throwing money away to put metal on the formation in its present state. 1 found it necessaiv to suspend work on Edwin Holmes' contract, No. 5, as it wai impossible to finish off the wcrk owing to weather conditions.
"Waiuku-Awhitu road. —During a portion of the month my staff and self have been engaged defining a new road line between junction with Kobe Kohe road and Pollok. A good line of road has been obtained, the steepest grade being one in thirteen. At next meeting of your Ciuncil I will repoit more fully on this proposed road and will be in a position to give the cost of construction, fencing and likely compensation, if any. "Great South road.—A quantity of nrtal has been crushed at different quarries and is now being carted out for patching purposes, between Papakura and Bombay.
"Tuhimata road.—A metalli.ig contract is in progress on this road. Up to date over 300 cubic yards ot metal have been carted from Runniman railway station. Metalling and patching is being done on a number of other roads, but owing to the bad state of the weather it has been impossible to carry out works satisfactorily. "Tenders.— were called returnable on the 23rd Hay, for contract No. 52, for carting U6£ cubic yards of metal, Maungatawhiri Valky road, and for contract No. 53, fur quarrying and bieaking 150 cubic yards metal, Maung-tawbiri Valley road, one tender only being received; the price being excessive it was cot accepted. "Stone-crushing plant.—The plant during the past moith has been engaged crushing stone in the Bombay and Rama Rama districts, Drury riding, and n now at Ararimu. "Quarry Reserve, Beach road, Tuakau.—An application was received at your last meeting for kase of the above reserve. I would suggest that tenders be called for the lease; the successful tenderer to have the section free of rent for thr:e years providing he fences and clears it to satisfaction of Council; tenderers to state what sum per annum they will be prepared to pay after three years from date of acceptance of tender. "Noakes' road, Mauku. -Mr N. Noakes wrote asking that some re* pairs be done to his access road. This road branches off from Waiau Pa to I'atumahoe road and is about tnree-quaitsrs of a mile in length, the greater pottion having never been formed. With the expenditure of about- £35 a fair job coulJ be made.
"Supply ot Btone. —I would suggest that tenders be invited, returnable about the end of this month, for the supply and delivery of spawls on the different roads throughout the county; this being necessary tu assure constant work foi the crut-h----ing plant during the summer. *
"Re dedication of Gibson's read, Tuakau. —A big improvement has been made on tbe formation of this rosd since the first application was made to your Council. I would, however, like to see a neater finish put on the road before it is accepted as a dedicated road. "Culvert beyond Mercer.—The old wooden bridge is being replaced with a concrete pipe culvert and will shortly be completed.
"Other matters left to rre fur consideration will receive attention at tbe earliest possible date." Cr Flanagan agreed that the spawling contracts should be got on with straight away. Cr Renall said he was glad that the Waiuku-Awhitu deviation was going ahead. He moved, That the engineer get the road surveyed. This would give a short road from Wsiuku to Awhitu and do away with a badly graded road.—Seconded by Cr Lyons and carrkd. On Cr Fulton's motion it was decided to a?k that a better tinish be put on Gibson's road. The engineer's report was 1 adopted
