ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. At a late hour last night an unknown man awakened the proprietor of the Tuakau hotel and appealed lor medical aid. It is alleged that the man in question being out of work left Aucklsod for Tuakiu He went into an unoccupied building undergoing alterations in George street and first tried tg hang himself and failing in the attempt tried to cut his throst. He made a small incision which was afterward) stitched by Dr Checsman. The sufferer was removed to Auckland in the 230 a.m. gocrN train. GUN CLUB. The w.athtr was very unfavourable for the first shoot for the cup kindly presented to the Club by Mr M. Foley. The conditions arranged were that the cup must be won tithcr three times in succession or else five times a* different intervals. Mr W. Deeble proved successful, getting 9 out of 10 birds off the 18yds mark. The following are the other scoies:— S J. Thotn 12yds and C. Booker 10yds, 7 birds each; A. Drake 14yds, B. McGaban 14yds, Billington 15yds, G. Prescott 14yds and J. McNeil 14yds, 6 birda each; W. McGahan Mydfl, J. Wilson 12yds, 5 birds each; J. Booker 10yd&. V. Wool ley 16yds, J. Levett 11yds, 4 birds each; Dr Cheesman 11yds, 3 birds. BAND OF HOPE.

The first ol the winter series of the band of Hope meetings was held in the hall on Tuesday evening, a large number attending. Musical and elocutionary items were renJered as follows:—Pianoforte duet, Mrs Hunter and Miss Dickens; vocal solos, Miss Hallamure and Mr Mollard; recitation, Misa Ina D°eble; reading, Mr Fitchat; duet, Kr and Mra Goldsmith. Mr Souster addressed the meeting and also gave a tell ringing exhibition. TUAKAU TENNIS CLUB.

Ihe lady members of the above Club have been playing a series of handicap sineles in connection with the racquet kindly presented by Mr Henderson for that purpose. After a keen contest Miss L. Foley was declared winner. The following are handicaps and results:—

First Bound. Miss Taylor owe 9 v. Mrs Pirrilt, 40-38. Mrs Strahan owe 12 v. Miss L. Foley. 34-40. Miss M. Taylor owe 5 v. Mrs Pr.scott, 40-38. Second Round. Miss Whiting owe 9 v. Mrs Northmore. 40-38. Miss M. Taylor owe 3 v. Miss Taylor, 33-40. Miss L. Foley owe S v. Miss Whiting, 40-38. rinal. Miss L. Foley owe 3 v. Miss Taylor, 40-38.
