Mayor's Work Recognised.

A meeting wns held on Saturday night for the purpose of initiating h movement to suitably recognise the services rendered ti the borough Ly the Mayor, Mr K. Lawrie.

Mr J. Koulston, who was voted lo t'ie chair, apolouiscd for the absence of his fellow-convener, Mr A. 1). Barter, who was unavoidably absent. The object vl the meeting was tu mark their appreciation of tho services rf the public men in gerernl and of the Mayor in particular. They were not interested at tho present timo in the forthcoming election; what they desired to do was to mirk what hod been done. When the movement was taken up he hoped it woulJ be taken up enthusiastically so as to bo an honour to Mr Lawrie and a credit to the district. He had been spaken to by quite a lot of people sympathising with the movement, who said they would stand in with whatever was done at this meeting. After some discussion as to procedure, Mr B. H. Andrew moved a motion affirming the desirability of marking the meeting's appreciation of the work that had been done.

Seconded by Mr J. H. Keith and carried unanimously. Mr Andrew suggested that u souvenir in the shape ol' plate would be better than a banquet because it would be a permanent reminder for future years, •Mr K. Perkins expressed his sympathy with any movement of this kind. Mr Lawiio had given a lat of time to the work and had done his best.

The mutter of fixing the amount of the individual subscription was then considered ar.d it was finally agreed to make it 2j 61 It wbb pointed out that the recipient would doubtless appreciate the action of a greater number of subscribers with a lower subscription than a smaller number each paying a bigger turn. In referring to the time that Mr Lawrie had put in, Cr Comrio mentioned that during Mr Deane's illness Mr Lawric had done the greater part of the Town Clerk's work.

Mr J. Koulston agreed to act as canvasser, and Rev. F. B. Uobson as secretary. Those present formed thimselvea into a committee to give effect to the'proposals.
