PAPAKURA WATER SUPPLY.

"U> nothing extenuate, nor set down auuht in malice

We desire to direct the attention of our readers in the Papskura town district to the loan proposals which the To«a Botfrd is submitting to the ratepayer*. At its last meeting the Board decided to ask the ratepayers to sanction a loan of £IO,OOO for the purpose of providing Papakura with an adequate'water supply. In having come to its decision the Board has acted after very mature deliberation. About fiftetn months ago th 3 proposal was submitted to a public meeting of ratepayers and there appeared to be a general agreement then that the time had arrived when a suitable water supply should be arranged for. Since that time Papakura has made satisfactory strides forward. It haß been made the terminus for the suburban railway service, and when the required alterations are made at the railway station to accommodate the suburban rolling stock the importance of the township will be considerably enhanced. A telephone exchange has been established, a new post office opened, the streets and the general conditions of Papakura have been greatly improved, and the public are looking forward to the time when railway workshops will be established here. If Papakura is to become a residential suburb of impoitance it is quite evident that the conveniences of modern life must be provided. That is the WBy to attract population, to promote enterprise, to benefit the health and to widen the interests and enjoyments of the people. Papakura is splendidly situated, with a magnificent natural water service on one side to supply all the needs of the place and an outlet to the uea on the other to make the sewerage of Papakura thoroughly efficient and inexpensive. Just now the Board is confinirg its attention to the supply of water for domestic, irrigation and power purposes. The idea ia to draw from the inexhaustible cupply at Hunua Gorge Falls. Twelve months ago it was estimated that if six-inch pipes were employed the service would be established for £7000; while for £IO,OOO eight-inch pipes could be put in. What the Board proposes is to raise a loan of £IO,OOO ar.d to do the beft that can possibly be done with that sum. If the six-inch pipes are employed then it is expected that the cost will be much less than £IO,OOO in which event, we understand,i the Board will only borrow the sum require! It is well known that the quality of a good deal of Papakura's well water is uncertain, and its quantity was shown during the recent dry weather to be inadequate. The Board's suggestion will overcome the difficulties of the past and furnish a generous supply of pure water for the future. The poll is to be taken ou May Uth and in view of ail the facts we think thai the ratepayers would be-well advised to give the Jjjoard their support by sanctioning the loan. If the water is installed Papakura will have taken another and a very decisive step forward in its policy ot progress. For the sake of the health, the well-being and the development of Papakura we trust that the loan will be carried.
