MERCER.

DANGEROUS RIVER. A child named Alex Rowland was accidentally drowned in the Waikato river, at Mercer, on Sunday afternoon. In returning their verdict the jury added a rider, "that the Waikato is a dangerous river to bathe in anywhere near Mercer (this applies to our side largely) for children, and that public attention should be drawn to this by notices being put up warning bathers." The river runs out from the bank quite shallow for 'about twelve feet and then drops to 8 or 10 feet. The child presumably slipped over this ledge. CATHOLIC. After the meeting the organiser was enterlaineJ at luncheon by Mr and Mrs G. Morgon at their fine residence.
