HUGE PILLAR OF CHEESE.

South Taranaki's Output.

A return furnished by the West Coast Refrigerating Company at Patea gives some idea of the extraordinary development of the dairy industry in South Taranaki. ttince the commencement of the season, four months ago, no fewer than 75,369 cases of cheese have been shipped to the Home market. This is some 9241 cases more than the quantity shipped during the whole of last season. The figures at first glance convey little or no meaning 10 the lay mind, but when compared with some object that one is familiar with, their magnitude can be appreciated. Most people are aware that Mount Foment towers up to a height of 8260 feet above the sea level, and a Patea man with a penchant for working out problems states that if these 75,369 cases of cheese were pla;ed on end skyward?, and 24 Mount Egmonts were placed one on top of the other, side by side with the gigantic pillar of cheese, the latter would still tower above the peak of the 24th mountain by over half-a-rnile. The value of this pillar represents something over £300,000 in hard cash. This has all been won from the cows of South Taranaki in four m nths.
