MAUKU ATHLETIC CLUB.

Annual Meetinfl. This your, favoured with ideal weather, the Mauku Athletic Club had a record meeting, the attendance being considerably in excess of any previous gathering, close on £:'o bein;„ r taken at the Kates'.

The president, Mr J. Goldswortiiy, and the secretary, Mr William Finlay, had been untiring in their efforts to make the meeting a record one, ami it. is satisfactory to note that their cli'orts wtro well responded to, both entries and attendance exceeding previous years. Mr W. Finlay had a particularly busy time and as is usual with him in this class of work acquitted himself most cieditsbly. The club is certainly fortunate in having a secretary with such energy and ability to run the meeting. Around the trees picnic parties were enjoying the day out, whilst old acquaintances who had not met since la6t year enjoyed a friendly chat, and everywhere one heard the old time greeting: "A happy New Year old chap. How's the wife and family?" The stepping competition proved a profitable and interesting event, no few?r than 46 ccmpctitors "having a try." On the whole the average result was splendid, most ot the farmers being excellent "distance judges." Fun was provided with the obsticle race, the competitors having to wriggle through rope loops, through swinging bags, over rows of hurdles, under a heavy bar fixed close to the ground and finished up on all fours. Little Martin Ncda overcame all the obstacles in masterly fashion. The handicapping reflected great credit on the hardicappcrs, Messrs Hleydell and F. Henry. While waiting for the races to start some of the scratch men "did a growl,' 1 but when the race wa° run there were very few that c.iuld complain. Music was discoursed during the afternoon by Davidson's string band.

The social in the Patumahoe hall in the evening proved as successful as the sports meetirg, ever 50 mile guests paying for admission at the door. Music was supplied hy Davideon'd band and was pronounced ns being absolutely the beat dscce music ever heard in the hall, which is saying a good deal. Mr W. Howard acted as M.C. in his usual efficient manner.
