THE FARES WE PAY. Country People at Disadvantage. Petition to Prime Minister. The following petition has been forwarded to the Prime Minibter. It was signed by all the members of the County Council, members of the Pukekohe Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, and by nearly all members of Road Boards in the county. " To the Honourable the Prime Minister—- " Sir,—We, the undersigned, as representing the settlers between Drury and Mercer, who largely use the railway, would again earnestly beg to draw your attention to the mdfet unequal conditions that prevail in railway fares, as between us and those who live in the suburban area. " We do not ask for an extension of the suburban area at present, realizing that whatever conditions prevail in this respect on one section of the railways must prevad on all; but we do consider that charging us about double for travelling over the same piece of railway, is to differentiate most unjustly and inequitably between us and those living in the suburban area. " We would also beg to draw your attention to your public utterances on the above subject. Firstly, to what you said on the occasion of a banquet tendered to the Hon. Mr Myers at Manurewa, when he was Minister for Railways, and an extract of which we enclose herewith, and secondly, your reply to a # deputation that waited upon you in the Pukekohe hotel at Pukekohe, on November 21st, .1912, when you promised that all travellers on the New Zealand railways should have the advantage of the suburban faies as soon as the finances of the country would allow of it being done. "We notice that recently in Parliament, the Hon. the Ministe: for Railways laid proposals befon the House providing for increases t< one grade of railway servants to the extent of £70,000 per annum. W< do not say that this is unjust o: unnecessary, but we do think that i the finances of the country cai stand such a strain as this for on grade of railway servants, surel the public, and more especially tb" settlers who provide a very larg share of the fares and the great* part of all the freights should ha\ some slight consideration, and that all the care and solicitude of the railway department should not be expended on tourists and people living in the suburban areas, who after all provide only an infinitesimal portion of the railway revenue. " We recognize that in your high position these matters are somewhat difficult to adjust; but whilst we are proud that our repressntative occupies the highest position in the land, you are still our member and we have no one else to whom wo can look for consideration such as we have respectfully set forth."
