THE PUBLIC CEMETERY.

As a result of the sacred concert held some time ago a sum of money was raised fur the improvement of the public cemetery in Pukekohe. Since the concert, subscriptions from Messrs A. B. Barter £1 Is, and W. Adams (Puni) 10s Cd, have brought the total cash up to about £23. This money i still held by the secretary of llio , onnert committep, Mr B. TT. Andrew, who is anxious to liund the

amount over to the Borough Council. The difficulty in the way appears to be that the Council is not yet the controlling body. We are given to understand thati the committee are desirous of at once placing this money at the disposal of the Council, leaving it to the Council to spend the proceeds in whatever direction they think best. The committee will be prepared to make a suggestion if th« Council wish it, but if not they are willing that the Council should act entirely upon their own judgment. We agree with Mr Andrew that it is highly undesirable that public money should be left in the hands of private individuals, as in such an event as death occurring matters might easily become complicated. The cemetery badly needs re-plan-ning and improvement and it is to be hoped that no unnecessary delay will take place before the Council is placed in a position of authority to take action. Incidentally, we have been asked to say that if any others i desire to subsciibe towards the cemetery funds before the money is passed on to the Borough Council members of the concert committee or the secretary will be pleased to receive the subscriptions.
