MAUNGATAWHIRI VALLEY.
A GOOD-BYE FUNCTION. A pleasant little function eventuated in the Maungatawhiri Valley school rooni on Saturday afternoon, when the children of the Sunday school assembled to bid farewell to their teacher, Mr H. Johnson, whn has just succeßssfully completed his . final examination for Holy Orders, f and has been appointed to a charge at Whangarei. It was originally intended to have had the annual school picnic, but owing to the unfavourable weather conditions outside sports were abandoned and tbe large assembly of parents, friends and children adjourned to v the schoolroom to partake of a sumptuous afternoon tea provided by the ladies of the district. After the creature comforts bad been duly sampled, the Rev. W. Fookes, in a particularly happy little speech, presented to Mr Johnson, on behalf of the children, a fountain pen and to Mr and Mrs Johnson, from tbe parents and friends, a purse of sovereigns, as small tokens of their esteem, respect and appreciation. Mr Johnson, when responding, dwelt upon the comparatively easy task he bad in working in an oldestablished district as compared with tbe up-hill fight of the early settlers who had numerous difficulties to surmount with but -few of tbe modern comforts and conveniences, but whose hard toil had made a veritable wilderness to blossom as tbe rose. Hearty cheers far tbe guests of the day and many-expreseed good wishes for their future success and happiness brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
