ORGAN RECITAL.
Most Successful Performance. The organ recital by Mr J. H. Philipot, of St. Matthew'?, Auckland, was held at St. Andrew's on Tuesday evening and was indeed a musical treat. The appreciative congregation were glad they braved the elements ta be present. It would be difficult to single out one item as being better than another. The opening organ solo, "War March of the Priests" (Mendellsohn), was masterfully executed. " Berceuse" (De Lille) and " Bells " (Elvey) were delightfully rendered, also " Largo in G " (Handel) and " Song to the Evening Star" (Wagner), the juanissimo passages being well sustained. Mr Phillpot reached his triumph in the rendering of the "Hallelujah Chorus" (Handel). The anthem 3 were all good, 'lhe sopranos were a little weak in the opening anthem, " 0 Saviour of the World " (Goss), but decidedly better in "I am the Way " (Wheeler). The last, " Hail! >i Gladdening Light" (Firld), was splendidly sung. " There is a Green Hill Far Away " (Gounod), by Mrs , ; Motion, was listened to with rapt attention; her sweet and sympaxhetic soprano voice blended well ' * with the organ, and her words were vsiipg both clearly and with feeling. "MrsT Pilgrim sang "Man of borrows " (Adams), her full-toned and rich voice being heard to advantage. In the absence of Miss Bagnall, Mr Gilroy sang "Tho Legend;" his rendering of tho solo in tho anthem "Hail! GlacTdening Light" was first-class, his tenor voice carrying well. Tho choirmistress, Mrs Pilgrim, and her efficient choir are to be complimented upon their attainments. With the final liyrnn, and Benediction by Rev. F. 15. Dobson, a memorable evening was concluded.
