WAIUKU ROAD BOARD.
Monthly Meeting. The monthly meeting cf thu Waiuku Roau Board was held on Saturday, 22nd inpt., when the following members were present:— Messrs Higginson (chairman), Hull, West and Williams. ' COUNTY ROADS. The chairman reported having asked the County Council whether the Council or the Road Board were to attend to the county r:ads in this diUrijt, ar.d they said the matter rest'd entirely with himself. He thought it better for the Koad Board to act in the meanwhile. Mr Higginson stated tint he ha I teea around with tha county ergineer and inspected the different rosds and found most of them in fair order. The Waiuku-Mauku main ccach road was the worst and needed some attention in different place?, particularly about the Waitangi cu'ticg. Some patching metal was needed in other placer, eo he thcuKht they should call tenders fur the lot. The surfaceman reported tfcat 75 yards would be needed from the bridge to Grimmer's bill, 25 yards from the hill to Lawton's, and 300 yards on to the old Mauku boundary cn the WaiukuPukekohe road and on the Drury road, 25 yards from Flexman's to the waterhole, 40 yards from Bishoff's to the Waitangi bridga and 40 yards from Re'd's flat to the creamery. Mr Hull said while they were talking metal he could do with some in his ward, on the cemetery road. Fifty yards he thought would bp * enough Mr Higgi-son: Wrll, you bad better all snesk now and we will put it all together. He would require 150 yards for Jh3 swamp road?. Mr Higgireon proposed, and Mr We?t seconded, that tenders ba called ill. the "Times" for 750 yar's metal. This ha tioug'.t would induce some outside cantractors to tender.— Carried. WAITANGI HILL. Mr West wished to know if tha id:a was to re metal Waitangi till. Mr Higginson: The engineer said a deviation would cost £4OO or £SOO. aud he could never get a grod grsde on the present hill.
Mr Went considered it would be cheaper to fix ths hill up than go in lor a deviation. Wtat with the money that bad been spent it seemed a pity to now throw it all away. One .pwner, he said, had wanted £SOO to go through his property years ago and there were two to deal with. The cleik stated that a road engineer had told him that a good grade could be got without any difficulty. Mr West proposed that the county engineer b? requested to take t& levels and report as to what could be done to improve the grade, and also the cost and improvement it a deviatioo was taken. His private opinion was that it would be much cheaper to do the present road up properly. Anjtow, if th;re was any likelihood of a deviation it seemed silly to spend much money on metal, as it would take 200 yards at least to fix this part of the road up. Mr West's motion was eeconded by Mr Williams ar.d carried. KAHAWAI BLOCK KOAD. H:e ck;lc said he h3d done nothing over this matter, as h 3 found that oviing to the Board's action in passing a resolulicn fo strike off sll outstanding ratep, there was as yet nothing owing on Iha properties it was propoaed to sell, No rate had been struck since the resolution was passed, so the:e was really r.o liability. THE SURFACEMAN.
The Board's permanent ouifaceiran, Mr Patterron, wrote asking for a rise in wages. He had been 3§ years in the Board's employ and had never aaked for a rise before. Members thought as a horse had to be kept and as hs was a good man a rise of Is a day could be granted. QUARRY-BARNABY ROAD. Mr S. Tracey wrote pointing out that owing to tha forming of the Quarry-Barnaby road wheel traffic was completely cut off from his house. It the Board would supply pipes he would be billing to cart and lay them in readiness for any tilling that was needed.—Resolved to attend to the matter. A letter from the Prime Minister, with reference to grant of £IOO for completion of thi Quarry-Barnaby road, stated that he wculd have much pleasure in submitting their request to the Minister for Public Works for consideration when the Public Works Estimates are being framed. THE WAIUKU WHARF. A letter frcm the Public Works Department asked under what conditions the Northern Steam Ship Co. had the use of the Waiuku wharf, whether the conditions embody any liability to maintain the wharf, and a* to what right the Board inlds in the wharf, and how it is vested. The clerk replied saying that the wharf was vested in the Board under an Order-in-Ccuncil with th?
right to charge £4O a year, the monies to be spent in maintenance, etc. NEEDLES WHARF. The Department also wrote stating
that the proposals fur expending the £1 for £1 grant up to £l5O had been referred to the marine engineer for approval and until this was received and the work authorised operations could not be commenced. The letter further asked whether the necessity for the above work wai in any way obviated or affected by the Auckland Harbour Board's scheme for the WaikatoManukau canal. The clerk wrote stating that he could not aay definitely whether the wharf would te affected by the proposed lock.
